Wireless Weather Station

A wireless weather station is one of the more recent developments in home weather stations which allows you to monitor complete outdoor weather conditions from inside your home.

These wireless weather stations take into account a variety of weather indexes like the temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, etc.

Many of them can be set up so they can record temperatures, as well as other readings, from both inside and outside the house. The key to their convenience is that they operate on radio data signals instead of wire cables. So placement of both the inside unit and the outside sensors can be maximized for best results.

Some of these wireless systems can also function with a computer interface and with the proper software, usually included but sometimes requiring a separate purchase, this can really enhance the user experience.

Wireless weather stations can literally be used anywhere: at your workplace or at your home, even while camping or vacationing!  Most of these wireless weather stations have an alarm system to warn you about potential rough weather conditions.

And some of them have built in Weather Alert radios, tapping into the SAME alert system used by NOAA, the government agency that provides US weather data and predictions.

If you are planning to get yourself a wireless weather station, here are a few things to consider.

  • Transmission range, which in turn depends on the unobstructed open area present around the wireless weather station.
  • Potential interference – either from other weather stations or other radio services using the same frequency your system works on.
  • Potential signal disruption – things like steel frame or other metal buildings, metal roofing, walls of mesh reinforced concrete or stucco, can all cut down on your ability to receive the wireless signals from the sensors.

Wireless weather stations are generally more expensive than the older (and newer) cabled devices. But because of their mobility and flexibility they can be the ideal investment for a new system or to replace an older wired unit with a wireless weather station.
